Air Filters

Many homes and apartments have air filters that need to be changed regularly.

Check:

  • Where the filter is located

  • What size it is

  • How often it should be changed

  • Whether you or the landlord are responsible

A dirty air filter can affect air flow, dust, allergies, and the heating/cooling system.

Smoke Detectors

Test smoke detectors regularly.

Also know:

  • What kind of batteries they use

  • How to replace the battery

  • What the chirping sound means

  • Whether your home has carbon monoxide detectors

Do not ignore a chirping detector.

Unclogging Drains Safely

Start simple.

Try:

  • Plunger

  • Drain snake

  • Removing visible hair or debris

  • Hot water, if appropriate for the pipe and clog

Be careful with chemical drain cleaners. Do not mix drain cleaners with other products.

If the clog is serious, repeated, or causing backup, call a professional or landlord.

Apartment and Home Maintenance Basics

Breaker Box

Know where your breaker box is.

If power goes out in one area, a breaker may have tripped.

Basic steps:

  1. Find the breaker box.

  2. Look for the switch that is not fully aligned with the others.

  3. Turn it fully off.

  4. Turn it back on.

If the breaker keeps tripping, call maintenance, a landlord, or an electrician.

Water Shutoff

Know where the water shutoff is for:

  • Toilet

  • Sink

  • Washing machine, if applicable

  • Main water supply, if accessible

This matters if there is a leak or overflowing toilet.

When to Call for Help

Call maintenance, a landlord, or a professional if:

  • There is active leaking

  • You smell gas

  • Breakers keep tripping

  • There is mold spreading

  • Outlets spark

  • Water backs up

  • You see pests

  • You do not know what you are doing and the problem could cause damage

Part of being responsible is knowing when not to guess.
